PRP for Low Ovarian Response

PRP for Low Ovarian Response

Many women have a low ovarian reserve which can be suspected by a low ovarian volume or

antral follicle count [number of small follicles] seen on transvaginal scan, low AMH or elevated FSH

on blood testing. Despite maximum ovarian stimulation only a small number of eggs are retrieved

in an IVF cycle. To date there is no proven treatment to “rejuvenate “ the ovary and increase the

number of eggs collected. Results of using testosterone and growth hormone injections are

variable.

Recent experimental studies have however shown promise in using PRP intra-ovarian injections to

increase the number of eggs from a stimulation cycle. Platelets are a component of blood which

play an important role in natural healing containing many growth factors that improve blood supply

and new growth of cells at the site of injury. Using a TGA approved system the patients blood is

processed to isolate a high concentration of these platelets which are then injected into the ovary

either transvaginally or during a laparoscopy. These studies have shown a subsequent increase in

pregnancy rates within the next 3 months of the injection.

If your clinical situation indicates it Dr Turner will discuss the above experimental treatment option

with you.
